Both are fine. I wouldn't advise spending time in either town except to

rest your head. Both Kanab and Springdale have enough places to get yourself a burger and a beer at night, and a cup of coffee in the morning. Other than that, the agenda should be to get out of town and get outdoors. We've always been fine in Kanab, but all we need is a pillow and a washing machine in the hotel. If the wife or other traveling companions want more or desire some small-town shopping, then Springdale or Lake Powell's touristy area probably a better bet. But neither of those places held much attraction for me outside the aforementioned beer and burger.
