(This is long).

My wife and I lost our six-month-old daughter in '93. For a couple of days, she was listed as a SIDS death; after the autopsy, they found an undiagnosed (and virtually undiagnosable) heart tumor, that had eventually just shut her heart down. They couldn't have found it unless they had MRI'd an (apparently) healthy six-month-old.

A few points:

1. We worked with the SIDS group for years after that, although our daughter was not technically a SIDS death. Even among the SIDS families, who have NO good explanation, there were fewer divorces than you'd think.

2. My wife and I are still together, and have two girls, one who preceded the one we lost, and one after. Not saying the aftermath wasn't pretty hard to take, but we got through it.

3. But we had nobody to blame. I have to think that the Heap thing is a whole other level of awful.
