Right, it's coaching both in terms of how they are trained and

how they are utilized.

Also, the last HC did not bring in all thqt many highly rated recruits. There is an enormous difference in high 5's vs low 4's. Low 4's are closer to being 3's than 5's. Not all classes are created equal. And at the end of the day, it is a numbers game. Not all 5's will pan out, but they are more likely to perform at a high level than any random 3 star.

Lastly, the game of football still begins from the inside out. Dominate the lines and life is easy for everyone else. Lose the point of attack, and the game is extremely difficult. Throw in a very good college QB with wheels and a lot of ills can be covered up, but the team still has to play defense somewhere along the way.

Too often these conversations turn ignorantly binary with ideas like lower rated players inherently have more heart, work harder, and are smarter players than higher rated players. None of that is true. Each player is his own mix of those things along with maturity and natural ability. As a group, and given a team needs 40-50 guys ready to play at a high level any given weekend numbers matter, higher rated players tend to be ahead of the curve and stay ahead of the curve at the college level.

I am very sceptical of Coach Mendenhall having a lot of success in the ACC without recruiting at a fairly high level. The NCAA may eventually knock Carolina down, but VPISU amd Miami appear to be in very good hands, as are L'ville, Clemson, and FSU. Johnson deserves his due in ATL, though I wonder how well they do in the improving conference. And a step below that, we see a well coached dook team that is unlikely to challenge the top but can frustrate teams in the middle. That is over half the conference without mentioning Pitt, which seems to hire well but struggles to retain coaches these days.
