Re: Thanks for a few tips - any recommended sites for most efficient guidance

I'm kind of self-taught and most of what I learned from others occurred at presentations./conferences rather then from web sites. A few suggestions:

(1) A lot of people create a Google search in the form of a question. Avoid that. Instead, think about which words and phrases are most likely to appear on the web pages that you are seeking. If you are looking for a web page about all-time greats in UVA history, for example, type if names of all-time greats, each name in a quotation marks. If I'm seeking a web site that lists the scoring leaders for UVA each year, include a wide range of years: 1967 1973 1991 1995 2003 2009 2012 2015

(2) The minus sign is a powerful tool. If I'm searching for web pages about a person who shares his name with a well-known actor, for example, your search results will be dominated by pages about the actor unless you include in the search: -actor

(3) No need to type "and" into Google searches -- Google assumes you are seeking pages that include every word and phrase in your search.

(4) To search domain sites, use 'Google site: domain name' to hone in for results from specific websites

(5) If you are looking for recent news, click on tools and select the time period for which the news appeared -- the last 24 hours, for example.

(6) If you are looking for a specific phrase but don't recall one of the words, search using quotation marks and use an asterisk as a substitute for the missing word.

Hope that helps!
