It's funny what you can find in the archives

just perusing some WW I Naval death records, and see a card for "George Wichman Worley Lt. Commander US Navy Reserve-Lost at Sea."

Curiously Google the name and find out about the story of the USS Cyclops and the controversy surrounding its disappearance.

According to wikipedia, Naval Intelligence discovered he was born in Germany in 1862. Although the wikipedia article says the official Navy Register has is birth date as December 11, 1865. The card I see says December 11, 1866 in San Francisco.

I found a news article which said he was adopted and took the name of his adopter. The wikipedia article says he took the name of some friend.
