It drops from a mitigated $3M to a non-mitigated $1.7M

In the case where he fails badly, gets canned, and ends up as a lower-conference coach or assistant, Clemson might come out ahead about $800K. So they limited their worst-case scenario but are not saving as much as it sounds due to the change in mitigation clause.

One of the alumni favorites to replace him (Will Wade) just started a new job at LSU, as did another one of their likely targets (Keatts), so it is not like they have any alternative coaches eager to take the job (unless they want to lure Frank Martin over).

Plan A over at Clemson is probably to give Brownell another 2 or 3 years actually, not just 1. His buyout drops pretty quickly after the 2nd and 3rd year so this is designed to make him cheaper to fire after each additional year of rope. I think Brownell really wants to stay in Clemson even though the alumni and fans are rejecting him. But if he did want to audition for another HC job elsewhere, this contract gives him the time to do that while still keeping his salary requirements high.
