All of his assets are up for grabs with the exception of the pension.

The timing of the suicide struck me when it happened. I think they are going to have to pay his salary. Given that the appeals are ongoing, he has not technically been convicted and the salary should be paid.

The suit is now against his estate. The assets in the estate are up for grabs if the civil suit is successful. So as the salary is paid into the estate, it is grabbed along with anything else still in there. Lots of things pass outside the estate so those things would not be subject to the civil suit. For instance, a checking account with right of survivorship to someone else.

The big loss may be punitive damages. Some states don't allow for punitive damages since one of the goals of punitive damages is to punish the person for their bad conduct and there is no way to punish a dead man.

So, the value of the case comes down to the loss suffered by the family of the victim. That depends on how much he contributed financially to the family, how much they miss him, how much time they spent with him, etc. All of which gets dicey if he was a bad actor himself.
