Both these guys are 'rubbing is racing' more than most, so I wasn't

surprised to see them tangle. First, Cav had zero hope of getting between Sagan and the barricades without some muscling, and he initiated the move by putting his helmet into Sagan's shoulder. Cav uses that noggin as a battering ram more than most everyone else, and it's often resulted in guys getting off balance and at times going down. This time Sagan held his line, seemed to shift a bit, and obviously threw the elbow out - whether to balance or to impede Cav - and caused Cav to go down. Live by the rubbing, die by the rubbing.

Honestly, I'm not sure Cav gets through clean in any fashion. Even if Sagan just held straight, Cav may still go down with that bully maneuver, especially as the group fades to their right. But regardless, Sagan by act or appearance gave it a little extra and was penalized with no result today.

Kittel and Greipel are big enough to power through most crowds. Cav and Sagan tend to use their head and shoulders to bully out other sprinters or competing lead-out trains. But alas, good on the French to get an early stage win through the chaos.
