Tennis is incredibly demanding on players' emotions...

as well as on their physical state. For me, the jury is out on exactly what combination of things caused Cilic's emotional breakdown there, but I'm pretty confident it did involve some foot pain, and I'm also pretty confident that he had come to realize he still had a bunch of tough games to endure with little to zero chance of winning. That is one tough combination of things to overcome, when you've already come so far over two weeks. Hat's off to Cilic for continuing to play hard.

I thought it was ironic that Federer, who has as steely a composure as anybody, broke down crying when it was over, and he was full of joy and satisfaction. He had played 3-setters the entire tournament, yet he was emotionally spent.

I don't know of another game that is so demanding on the player's psychological makeup AND physical endurance, especially MEN's tennis, where you might have to play three 5-setters in a row, as Sam Querrey had to do to reach the semis.
