I think there is a debate about how they've handled pitchers coming back from Tommy John surgery.

The Nats chose to shut down Strasburg. The Mets chose to pitch their guys instead. You can criticize the Nats decision from a baseball/win a title perspective, but it's definitely helped Stras in his recovery/longevity. From a health perspective, the Mets decision was short sighted relative to their ptichers' health.

Then again, throwing 97-100 and sliders at 92 is just not natural and pitchers are going to break down. Scherzer is the anomaly.

I think the Nats manage their pitchers health quite well. They've got a a clear protocol for Tommy John recoveries and an excellent track record. They routinely draft TJ kids where others shy away. Given the high return rate from elbow reconstruction, while it's a 12-18 month DL/rehad trip, it's the shoulder problems that always concern me the most as career threatening...
