Until the very recent rule change and LT's arrival, schools like UVA and UNC were (or were on a trajectory of) filling up their recruiting classes before the recruited players had even played a game as a 9th grader.

In that ER world is where it is very plausible to me that a Virginia player who hits a growth spurt later in HS would choose to walk on at UVA versus go elsewhere (great school and in-state tuition). I asked Starsia about walk-ons and he was very polite, but my takeaway was that a player would only have a chance at walking on if he filled a gap in a roster. My impression from LT (not first hand) is that a walk on is going to get a legitimate chance to outplay scholarship players and earn a spot. I think that's very healthy.
