Hoot didn't win the ACC tournament

I arrived in the fall of 1969, at the height of the "Boot the Hoot" campaign. The 69-70 season showed the initial signs of a turn-around, most obviously with the ACC tournament upset of UNC in the first round and near-upset of NC State in the semi-finals. The next year was the first of the Parkhill/Hobgood crowd, and the turn-around became real.

Following the 73-74 season, Hoot received an offer to start South Florida's program. I don't know whether he was beamering the athletic administration, but UVa let him go (against the vociferous objections of Mr. Carmichael, "Stormin' Norman's" dad) and traded up to Terry Holland. TH won the Hoos' first ACC tournament championship in his second year.
