Yes, changing that would be bad.

With regards to fouling, as a defender you are usually (or should be) more cautious in tackling in the box lest you give away a PK.

At the same time, refs usually let defenders get away with a little more in the box than they would outside of it, barring an egregious foul or obvious trip or something of the like. But defenders can usually get away with more grabbing and physical play in the box.

Although the wall issue is moot. You can have a indirect FK in the box (goalie picking up the ball on a pass back). If the ball is less than 10 yards from the goal the wall can be set in the goal mouth and no closer. I've seen it happen in pro games and had it happen in my own rec games as well.
