Wasn't discussing 'set roles' - theory vs. practice

I agree in theory our 4/5 are interchangeable. In practice, we have two different roster positions because players are different and you can compromise sometimes if it is only on one of the slots. For example, if you want to run lane-wide you need at least one of them to be able to pick-and-pop and drift to a corner, but not both. You need one of them to be able to guard a perimeter-oriented big, but not both. In 2-big sets you need one of them to be excellent at boxing out and rebounding against an opposing center, but not both.

I can call them the W and the S positions instead of the 4 and 5, but it is easier just to use 4 and 5 at the risk of not highlighting the heavy overlap in their responsibilities. Diakite can play the W and the S, but the coaches clearly preferred using him as the S last season, to the point of strongly preferring Hall or Shayok as the W instead of Diakite.
