It's even worse than that. players overseas get into academy and pro

formats earlier than age 18.

some of the most elite are going academy even younger (seriously - sometimes like age 7), where they are playing alot and education comes through the academy, but let's take a 16 year old that gets what amounts to a minor league contract with a club versus someone who completes highschool (playing club and odp but having to deal with school just like everyone else)

that's 6 years of subpar training (comparatively speaking only). and it's much much "worse" in many cases. we have some academies here, but we lag far far behind. ultimately i think it's the perception that one probably won't make it and, therefore, must have an education.

i'm not saying what is being done overseas is "right" for the general development of youth - however there is no doubt in my mind that this sort of thing is why we are behind the elite in terms of youth development
