It would take far more than 8, and it will be over football

Basketball bluebloods have very little control over the primary sources of revenue for the NCAA (their TV contract for the basketball tournament first and foremost). Their primary power is influence over people who serve on governing committees, etc. and right now the COI is dominated by folks who HATE Carolina.

Lawyers, and the threat of extended lawsuits highlighting general incompetence of the NCAA, is their only real card right now to limit sanctions. But UNC has very few allies in this particular battle as they are not waging a fight that other schools want to see happen. And there is no way any kind of break with the NCAA occurs over basketball money.

The likelihood that the football playoff conferences break away from the NCAA (or attempt to if they can accomplish it in just that sport) is real, but it in no way hinges on or would be impacted by a UNC-NCAA lawsuit over this particular investigation. The issues for a potential future split are not driven by frustrations with current NCAA enforcement, but merely by greed and the desire to have more control over the organization of the sport (say, for example, the ability to rearrange signing dates, relieve practice and roster limits, add more games to the calendar, forestall regulation on concussion prevention, etc.).
