In defense of last year, Daly had the benefit of a program that was already

fulling bought into the "system".

I still think there is an argument for being a bit extreme in your commitment to the "system" in the first year to deliver the right message. Make sure everyone knows this is how we expect everyone to play, and make certain they understand what it takes to play this way.

Also, as a new coach, your "free passes" only last so long. As a long term play, he could afford to under-perform last year if it was going to be long-term beneficial. This year, the pressure will start to go up, and perhaps his flexibility will to, and by delivering the message last year, he can afford to be more flexible this year.
