Actually Volleyball is probably the 2nd best professional prospect

A couple of things about the status of Volleyball at UVa and the ACC...

First, Volleyball is probably the second best prospective sport for a female athlete to have a professional team sport career- basketball being the first obviously. The fact that the jobs are overseas lessens it's visual impact here in the US, but the top athletes know it. While these have the same poor odds as any pro career, when you talk the very top players the odds are better- and the difference between the powerhouses and the also-rans is all about those top players.

Two key factors have kept the ACC from competing: facilities and coaches. Both of those are direct results of priorities as you stated. It is no surprise that the top teams are in the BigTen/Pac10 these days. They have poneyed up for the best coaches and have invested in quality facilities for the volleyball programs. They have done it because they a) have the money and b) haven't dedicated every last dollar to the FB coaches salaries like the SEC.

If UVa wants to truly be a national contender they have to upgrade the facilities tremendously - Mem Gym is historic and has a cool vibe, but it is NOT going to attract the top coaches and subsequently, the top recruits.

Finally, there IS a huge disparity in the level of prep volleyball around the country and the midwest (IL, IN, MN, WI and even PA) are major hotbeds. TX and the west coast are too, but they don't send as many back east. The Big10 can offer tuition discounts for many of these ladies thoughout the conference due to agreements between states. They can't get the same in the ACC and ACC schools are notoriously expensive for out-of-state tuition.
