The "Hokie Invasion" is not that impressive when you go beyond the surface

Sure, at face value, it's impressive for them that half the fans at Scott are Hokies fans while we only take a sliver of Lane when we visit. But there are several factors that make it less impressive:

1. They have nearly twice the student body we have. Hence, approximately twice the alumni, twice the amount of extended family that became fans as a result, etc.

2. Success on the field. It's a lot easier to go support your team when they're averaging 8 wins a year rather than when your team is averaging 4 a year. I think when people look at how supportive fans are, they don't control for success very often. VT fans going to more games doesn't necessarily mean they're better; if they were piling up non-bowl seasons, many wouldn't show.

3. Location. This is the big one. Obviously they have a lot of fans in SWVA, but the very large portion of their fan base has a shorter trip to Cville than Blacksburg, whether this be fans in the DC Area, 757, or Richmond. Also easier to fly to, FWIW. Add in that it's cheaper, and there's no reason for them not to go to Cville if they're usually making a farther trip anyways. Plus, it's during Thanksgiving break, so their students may be close enough to Cville to go while most of our students go farther away from Blacksburg for break.

As to percent of fanbase that didn't attend, yes, VT has a higher percentage that didn't attend, and it makes tons of sense. Their more rural culture is much more appealing to those who didn't attend college than our preppy one. They are more open with their licensing so they have way more gear available at places like WalMart. Finally, their long term football "success" probably won over large swaths of fans.
