Re: May I ask a follow up?

I have always believed there should be a well thought out weight & discretion involved in such matters, and that sadly vacated when Oliver got involved. No two things are the same thing, and the problem with the zero tolerance policy was it led to an abuse of discretion. A student athlete missing required study halls should lead to some sanction (for the principle of the rules being there for all to follow & for the good of a college kid that needs the structure). But a press release stating a kid is being suspended from team events for a non-specific violation of team rules or athletic department policies. Absolutely not. That’s overtly leading & permanently damaging to the student athlete. Every single UVA student athlete will be a job or graduate school applicant in a few short years & these public dispositions follow them.

It’s also damaging to the individual programs...could you imagine George Gelnovatch’s angst over, say 4 players being cited this way in a season? Four is a pattern. Four on a roster of twenty five is material. Non-specifics are a gateway to innuendo. Are those UVA soccer players prone to substance abuse problems, or worse? What is it with the culture of a program that has such a high propensity for things serious enough to be punished in a public worst possible way? In truth it could be a pattern of drug, alcohol, domestic violence dispositions. Or it could be kids who were late for mandated study hall. Fill in your own blanks. Competing coaches recruiting against George would. See a problem here?

I think it would be sufficient for coaches or an athletic department administrator to deal with certain offenses privately. A coach’s decision to not play a kid for a game or a meet without public commentary is well suited for some matters. I truly hope the Oliver act leaves with him.
