Unfortunately, the robust market breeds some unsavory behavior

There are definitely people out there that push fake autographs and trimmed cards. When I first started buying about 15 years ago, one of the cards I bought was a ‘56 Ted Williams that looked fantastic. Sent it in to be graded and found out it had been trimmed and was essentially worthless.

Learned my lesson and I haven’t bought an ungraded card since. I learned a further lesson later that not all grading companies are the same. If the card or autograph hasn’t been graded by PSA, SGC or Beckett, it may as well not have been graded at all. Fortunately, I only had to learn each lesson once and it didn’t cost me big. Still, being out a few hundred bucks and seeing what some people will pull to make money in a hobby that typically entails considerable sentiment really chapped my ass.
