Yesterday, UVa assistant coaches Bob Price and Anthony Poindexter made their way to Harrisburg, PA, to visit with one of UVa’s top remaining targets in 6-1, 185-pound running back Mikell Simpson . Yesterday’s meeting gave Simpson a chance to talk to Coach Poindexter, who would be his position coach, a little bit more.
“Last night was good because I got to talk to Coach Poindexter a lot more,” Simpson said. “He was telling me what it would be like if I were to choose UVa. He was telling me how they would use me and how I could replace Pearman. He said that, if I go there, then I can expect to get playing time real early. He said they need a back like me that is fast and can catch the ball.”
Simpson discussed what he likes about Coach Poindexter.
“He’s one of the coolest coaches I’ve met,” Simpson said of Poindexter. “I enjoy talking to him. He’s younger, so he understands the process and he can relate to what I’m going through. I like how he does things.”
Alabama running backs coach Sparky Woods has been Simpson’s primary recruiter. Does Simpson feel that he knows Poindexter, who is not the main recruiter from UVa, as well as Woods?
“I wouldn’t say as well because Coach Woods has been my main recruiter, but I know him well enough,” Simpson said. “I’ve definitely gotten to know him well enough. That’s the one thing about Florida – they don’t have a running backs coach yet.”
At the time we spoke (around 10:00 p.m.), Simpson had not yet heard from the University of Florida regarding today’s scheduled in-home visit.
“I haven’t heard from them tonight, so I’m not sure what’s up with them,” Simpson said last night. “It’s not going to delay my decision though. I’m going to announce at 3:30 or 4:00 next Wednesday on ESPN News.”
Simpson says that he will likely will not pursue the Gators if they don’t call over the weekend.
“I’m not going to call them,” Simpson said. “If they are not interested, I’ll just go on without them. The last chance they would have to make an in-home visit would be Monday, because I’m taking Tuesday to relax and enjoy the process coming to an end.”
As stated above, Simpson will announce his decision...
