Al Groh: “The more competition, the more positive energy you have.”
HOT SPRINGS, Va. – “Playing time is not inherited. It’s earned,” Virginia coach Al Groh said today at the ACC Football Kickoff, discussing the competition for playing time and starting roles at several positions, including receiver, outside linebacker and nose tackle.
“This year is the most intense competition for playing time as we’ve ever had,” Groh said. “The more competition, the more positive energy you have.”
“Ottowa has been one of our high energy, highly competitive, very tough players,” Groh said. “His being back with us is very much a plus. Obviously, this is an addition to the roster but a veteran addition. He knows how we go about things.”
The Cavaliers will have two new starters at outside linebacker. The only question is who they will be.
Groh said Vince Redd will move to defensive end because of his increased size. So Jermaine Dias , Marvin Richardson and Clint Sintim will compete with several newcomers, including Olu Hall , for the starting outside linebacker slots.
Sintim’s spring performance makes him a frontrunner for a starting role along with Dias. “What he certainly did is give us a lot of encouragement towards what he can be,” Groh said of Sintim. “He has the best combination of size, speed, and explosiveness of potentially anybody who has been there yet. It’s up to him to turn it into game production.”
