Marques Hagans was magnificent vs. FSU.

Florida State? Al Groh and his players weren’t talking about Florida State today. Nuh-uh. That’s history. Time to focus on North Carolina. But even UVa’s coach couldn’t help but gush a little more about Marques Hagans’ performance in the 26-21 upset of the Seminoles and discuss where it might rank among the best games by a quarterback in Cavalier history.

“I thought he was remarkable the other night,” Groh said. “I’m trying to be respectful and understanding of the performances of many terrific Virginia quarterbacks who have preceded Marques when I say that it’s got to be one of the better games that a Virginia quarterback has ever played.

Mike Groh and Matt Schaub?

“They’re two of the guys on the panel, yeah.” Groh said.

Hagans, though often flushed from the pocket by FSU’s pass rush, completed 27 of 36 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He led the Wahoos to two TDs and four field goals on their first seven drives. Florida State coach Bobby Bowden called it one of the best “one-man shows” he’s ever witnessed.

I can’t compare Hagans’ performance to those of UVa quarterbacks before 1988, but I’ve gone to almost every game since then. Here are my top five:

5) Matt Schaub vs. N.C. State, 2003: 41 of 55, 393 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT

Schaub was outdueled by Philip Rivers in a 51-37 loss, but he set school records for completions and passing yards.

4) Aaron Brooks vs. Virginia Tech, 1997: 23 of 34, 390 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INT

Brooks carved up the Hokies two
