Fall Practice 2006: Corner Position Still Open

Returning senior Marcus Hamilton is a lock to start this season at one cornerback position. The starter on the other side isn’t as clear.

Four different players are battling for playing time opposite of Hamilton as the season opener at Pitt approaches. In the mix are Chris Gorham , who opened the fall in an Orange jersey, Vic Hall, Chris Cook , and Mike Brown. The competition will continue for the foreseeable future.

“All four are considered candidates for the right corner slot and the respective back-up positions. I’m sure it will continue that way well toward the end of camp,” Groh said.

Groh said that it was possible that all four players could get playing time during the season, particularly since each member of the quartet is strong on special teams as well.

“All of them are amongst our better special teams candidates so that would be another consideration with them. It’s an altogether separate role, but one where they can be very important to us,” he said.

Bivens Working at Linebacker

True freshman John Bivens , out of Prince George High School, has moved over to work at inside linebacker. Bivens opened fall training camp at safety, but took part in linebacker drills over the weekend. Groh did not indicate in Monday’s teleconference that the move was a permanent one, but talked about the shift as part of “trying different things” in fall practice.
