Xavier Boyce , a 6-4, 200-pound quarterback/defensive back prospect, has received offers from two ACC schools in this early going of his recruitment. The Landstown (Virginia Beach, VA) junior is a versatile, athletic player who led Landstown to an 8-2 record in 2006, his first season as the starting quarterback.

“He’s a competitor,” Landstown head coach Steve Canter said of Boyce. “He’s a feisty guy. He’s also a smart football player. Last season, he did a great job of getting us lined up, which is important because we like to shift a lot. He exceeded my expectations at quarterback because he hadn’t done it since 2004, when he was on the JV team. He’s athletic. Boyce totaled close to 1600 yards of offense – 1,200 yards passing and 370 yards rushing – in his junior season, accounting for 12 touchdowns as well. He primarily played free safety his sophomore season and is getting some serious looks for defense on the next level.

“Virginia Tech wants him to play safety. They see him as an Aaron Rouse type,” Canter said. “Clemson likes him as a quarterback, so who knows where he could end up on the next level. I haven’t sat down and talked with him about which position he would like to play, but I’d imagine he’d be fine with anything as long as he can contribute to the team.”

The Hokies and the Tigers are the two ACC programs that have extended scholarship offers. Virginia Tech was the first to offer.

“Virginia Tech has offered him and so has Clemson,” Canter said. “Florida State, Florida and Miami are showing interest. Florida liked him a lot last year when they were recruiting Percy [Harvin]. Virginia has been showing interest. Coach Price has been through. I think he liked Xavier a lot. They are definitely on him pretty hard.”

Do the Hokies have an edge here?

“Virginia Tech has offered him. Xavier likes Coach Newsome and what the program is all about. I could see
