De Smet Jesuit (St. Louis, MO) center John Brandenburg , a 6-11 rising senior who recently narrowed his list of schools to Stanford and Virginia, made the first of two key visits that figure to factor greatly in his final decision. This past week he traveled to Stanford, checking out the program for two days before returning home late Saturday night.

“I got the grand tour. I saw everything there. The coaches and I were cruising around in a golf cart and they were showing me everything,” Brandenburg said. “I spent a lot of time with the team and the coaching staff. Everybody was great. The players were great. They have a lot of great people there.”

The major highlight of the trip, Brandenburg says, “was really the players. They weren’t conceited at all. These guys were really nice guys. It was a great team atmosphere. They were all just really great. It seemed like a really fun place to be.”

Stanford’s coaches addressed the potential for playing time as a true freshman, something that is an important factor to the 4-star recruit.

“As far as playing time and things like that, the coaches told me that Brook Lopez would probably be leaving after this year,” Brandenburg said. “Both of the Lopez twins may leave. They are expecting one guy to be gone, maybe even both. The coaches told me I could get a lot of playing time as a freshman.”

Brandenburg offered an initial comparison of his two finalists. He visited Virginia in June, immediately after the NBPA Top 100 camp.

“They are really different schools,” Brandenburg said. “They have different environments and they are in different conferences. There is the east coast, west coast difference. Virginia is a great school. The campus is really nice. I love the coaches…they
