Sylven Landesberg

Dave Leitao’s most highly rated recruit in his time at the University of Virginia, 6-6, 195-pound guard/forward Sylven Landesberg piled up the wins and the accolades in his senior season at Holy Cross High School (Flushing, N.Y.). Landesberg, who is averaging 29.7 points and 12 rebounds per game this season, became the school’s all-time leading scorer earlier this season, is a McDonald’s All-American and led Holy Cross to its first CHSAA varsity basketball championship since 1968.

Holy Cross, which is 22-8 on the season, moves on to the state Federation championship game to face the winner of Lincoln (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Bishop Maginn (Albany, N.Y.). Lincoln is ranked #14 in USA Today’s Super 25, while Bishop Maginn is ranked 24th in the same publication.


Q&A with Sylven Landesberg

TheSabre.com: What was it like to help Holy Cross capture the CHSAA championship for the first time since 1968?

Sylven Landesberg : “My coach told me there was nothing else for me to do but win the state championship. I had broken all of the school records. I was a McDonald’s All-American. I was just named Mr. Basketball in the state of New York. I’ve accomplished all I needed to accomplish except for the city championship. It was great to win it, but I didn’t understand how much it meant as much as our faculty. Our principal was crying. We hadn’t won since ’68 and there were people in the stands that played in that ’68 game. They were emotional about it.”
