Virginia freshman Sylven Landesberg wants to be a starter.

And he’s going to do whatever it takes to get there as soon as possible.

“I can’t wait,” Landesberg said of the season opener. “I’m going to work hard to do what I have to do to get that starting spot.”

The 6’6″ guard knows it won’t be easy on this team.

“I’m very impressed by all of my new teammates,” said Landesberg, who made the McDonald’s All-American Team last season. “Everybody is really well-rounded.”

Landesberg and his new teammates will hit the hardwood a little earlier this season, traveling to Ontario for a Labor Day exhibition tournament. The trip is especially exciting for Landesberg, who has never left the country to play basketball.

“I just got my passport and everything,” Landesberg said. “I’m really excited. It’s my first time playing against competition like this. It’s going to be great competition every night.”

The early action will no doubt help Landesberg adjust to the collegiate game more quickly. Landesberg believes he’s already begun adjusting to the speed of the game, one of the more difficult parts of the transition.

“I got used to it pretty quick,” he said. “I like to push the ball up the court and run and stuff. I’m catching on.”

In addition to catching on, Landesberg just wants to “get every part of my game better.” He plans to work on speed, strength, and footwork.

And he’s completely open to being conditioned by Leitao and the staff, a valuable quality in any player.

“Whatever the team needs me to do, I’m going to do,” Landesberg said.

Landesberg’s “for the good of the team” attitude will no doubt aid him in his quest for a coveted starting spot.
