UVa will further evaluate Spradling in the coming weeks
Shawnee Mission South (Overland Park, KS) point guard Will Spradling followed through with his plans to visit Virginia and Virginia Tech late last week, checking out the in-state ACC programs on Thursday and Friday. The 6-2, 150-pound junior still has not been offered by either program, but one of the two programs plans to take a much closer look in the coming weeks.
“Neither school offered, but I know a Virginia assistant coach is going to come out in a couple of weeks and watch me play,” Spradling said. “The head coach is going to come right after that to watch me. They said they would probably know if they will offer after those workouts.”
As for Virginia Tech, Spradling says, “They said they have a commitment from a 2009 point guard, so I don’t know where I stand. My parents asked them where I fit in and they didn’t really know.
“I think they will still recruit me how they were before, but I’m not as interested because they couldn’t explain where I would play for them and how I fit in.”
While Spradling is not sure of his standing with the Hokies, he did come away impressed by what Virginia had to offer.
“Virginia’s facilities, basketball gymnasium and practice facilities are by far the best I’ve seen from what I’ve visited,” said Spradling, who did not meet head coach Dave Leitao in person but spoke with him on the phone at length on Saturday. “The campus was all really nice and unique. There were a lot of students walking around on campus and I liked that a lot. The players were really cool.”
Spradling, who averaged 18 points, six assists and four rebounds last season as a sophomore, has earned scholarship offers from Kansas State and UNLV. Those two, along with Virginia, are “probably the main three” schools in contention, Spradling says.
