Bethel (Hampton, VA) point guard Jontel Evans signed a letter of intent with the University of Virginia last week, becoming an official part of Cavaliers 2009 men’s basketball recruiting class. Signing on the dotted line certainly was a special occasion for the 5-11, 185-pound senior.

“I signed it with my family there. It was a family thing with my mom, my dad and my cousins,” Evans said.

Proximity to home was a big pull for Evans, who chose the Cavaliers over offers from Marquette, Rutgers and Virginia Tech, among others. He expects to see his family in attendance at UVa games quite a bit over his next four years.

“It is cool that my family will be able to see me play a lot” Evans said. “UVa is only two-and-a-half hours away. Plus, they are in-state. That played a major part of my decision.”

Fresh off his signing, Evans enjoyed a taste of what his future will be like when he attended Virginia’s home-opener against VMI. He had a good time, seeing the Cavaliers in action and spending time with fellow UVa recruit Tristan Spurlock .

“It was a good experience,” Evans said. “I got to go in the locker room and see what that’s like. I saw Coach Leitao in action. He is similar to my high school coach. I’ve now seen how the players play. Coach Leitao lets them be pretty free on offense, but they are real strict on defense. That’s what I like.”

Evans averaged 12 points and five assists in leading Bethel to a 30-2 record last season, but it was his performance for Boo Williams AAU squad this spring and summer that really caught the attention of college coaches. Specifically, it was the defensive prowess he exhibited throughout the AAU circuit.

“I think what got me those looks for basketball was my defense and toughness,” said Evans, who scored an offer from Virginia after performing well
