Hargrave Military Academy (VA) senior power forward Deshawn Painter has received a release from the letter of intent he signed with the University of Florida, and the 6-9, 210-pound prospect is now free to be recruited by other schools. Painter knows of three schools that have shown immediate interest and expects to learn about more when he returns to Hargrave tomorrow.

“When I get back to school, I’ll really know which schools are looking at me,” said Painter, who is rated a 4-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com. “[Hargrave Postgraduate Head Coach Kevin Keatts] said schools are calling. The only ones I know of as of right now are Maryland, Virginia Tech and N.C. State. I haven’t been back to school yet, so I don’t know what other ones have expressed interest yet.”

Painter discussed the situation with Florida.

“Overall, it wasn’t a great fit,” Painter said. “We came to a mutual agreement. I wanted to go somewhere closer to home, so it would be easier on my mom.”

Painter added, “I’m open right now. There are no specific schools I’m targeting. I just got open.”

Prior to committing, Painter’s top four programs included the Gators, Louisville, Virginia and Virginia Tech. He seems interested again in both in-state programs.

“I think [Virginia Tech] is a great school,” Painter said. “I think it is one of the schools I’ll be taking a look at. I would take a look at [Virginia]. I definitely would, but I don’t know the situation until I talk to the coach.”

Asked to discuss the contact he had with Virginia Tech, Painter said, “They just said they are very interested. I think they are going to come at me pretty hard because I’m a Virginia guy. They were in my top four before I signed with Florida. They were one of the top schools in touch with me before I signed. I have a good relationship with Coach Greenberg.”

Two of Painter’s cousins, Vinston Painter and Randall Dunn , are freshmen on Virginia Tech’s football squad. Will this have an impact on his decision?

“We were close growing up,” Painter answered.
