Bethel (Hampton, VA) point guard Jontel “Bub” Evans and Word of Life (Springfield, VA) forward Tristan Spurlock decided last week that they would stick with the University of Virginia and new head coach Tony Bennett. Evans, a 5-11, 185-pound prospect who averaged 14 points, five assists and four rebounds per game as a senior, took some time to reflect on the Virginia coaching change and his ultimate decision.

TheSabre.com: How did it feel to make a final decision last week?

Jontel Evans : “A lot of people where I’m from were asking me what I’m going to do and where I’m going to go, so it felt good to get it off my chest and tell everybody.”

TheSabre.com: When you first learned the news of Coach Leitao’s departure, what was your reaction?

Jontel Evans : “At first I was speechless when Coach Leitao called and told me. My mind was racing, but inside I just wanted to wait it out. Then I found out Coach Bennett was going to be the coach. Before I made the decision to stay, I wanted to meet him personally.”

TheSabre.com: What was your reaction when you heard that Virginia had hired Coach Bennett?

Jontel Evans : “Who is he? That was my first reaction. All I heard were the big names like Jeff Capel and Tubby Smith. I had no idea who he was. Then I slowly got to find out who he was, find out about his system, and then I met him.”

TheSabre.com: Almost two weeks ago (on April 9th), you finally met Coach Bennett. What is the one thing you wanted to find out most heading into that meeting?
