At nine o’clock this morning, Ted Johnson didn’t know his son was even contemplating a commitment to the University of Virginia. James Johnson , a 6-9, 225-pound senior forward out of Elsinore High School (Wildomar, CA), called his father two hours later to discuss a possible decision.
“He called me and asked if he could ask me a couple of questions,” Ted Johnson said. “He said he felt like he wanted to commit. He asked, ‘What do I have to do to let the other coaches know I’m not going to take the other official visits?’ I asked him if he was sure. He said, ‘I really feel like this is the place for me. Getting to see some of the workouts, seeing Coach Curtis and Coach Bennett in action, I can tell this is the place for me.'”
The elder Johnson recalled more details about learning of his son’s decision.
“Church had just started and I saw it was him calling,” Johnson said. “We sit up on the balcony, so I went out into an upper-deck vestibule area to take the call. It has a beautiful picture of the area. I could see the road where James runs up twice a week. I see him running up that road all the time. It was pretty cool to talk to him about committing and seeing a big part of where he works out and trains. He thought so, too.”
Johnson followed through, committing to Tony Bennett before leaving UVa, where he was finishing up a 3-day official visit. His father admits that the decision was unexpected.
“It was a surprise. I’ll say that,” Johnson said. “I did know he was having a great time. It started Friday night, when he saw the guys work out. He shot around with Joe Harris , who had already committed. He hit it off big with him. I knew he was having a good time. My daughter is down at Liberty University and she got to come up and spent some time with him, too. She told me he was having...
