Chase Minnifield is expected to start at corner alongside Ras-I Dowling.
Several times during spring practice, new Virginia coach Mike London has mentioned playing more bump or press coverage with the cornerbacks. Of course, in order to deploy this strategy, a team better have corners that can handle the challenges. Fortunately for London and cornerbacks coach Chip West, the Cavaliers have a great pair of corners ready to lead the way.
Chase Minnifield and Ras-I Dowling give the Hoos two defensive backs that have the needed blend of strength and speed to play press coverage. The tactic requires playing close to the line, having strong hands to jam receivers and disrupt their release, engaging in physical contact within 5 yards, quick feet to backpedal, and fluid hips to turn and run when necessary. Dowling, 6’2″/200 pounds, and Minnifield, 6’0″/185 pounds, each fit the desired mold.
