Liberty Christian Academy (Lynchburg, VA) senior wide receiver Demitri Knowles has earned FBS attention, including an official offer from the University of Virginia, this offseason, but LCA head coach Frank Rocco believes the 6-1, 175-pound prospect’s recruitment could pick up significantly in the coming month.

UVa really was the first school to see what he can do. By virtue of that performance, they felt they would offer. They offered a week or so after. He is still slightly under the radar. This really is only his second year playing football. The fact that UVa saw him in action and was willing to offer is exciting. I think many other schools will join that group. Maryland in particular. They called on Wednesday about him.”

Connecticut and Liberty are also showing serious interest in Knowles, who is off to an excellent start to the 2010 season. He hauled in five receptions for over 100 yards and a score in a 13-11 win over Amherst and followed that up with nine catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-0 shutout of Gretna.

A player with excellent speed, Knowles finished the 2009/2010 indoor track season as the VIS state champion in the 55 meters, 300 meters and the long jump. The speed is certainly there, but the LCA star improved in other areas this offseason.

“Prior to him going to this 7-on-7 at UVa, he got together with our quarterback Seth Good and got some timing down and route running precision down,” Rocco said of Knowles, who hails from the Bahamas. “He improved in terms of understanding the position. After UVa, he went to a day camp at UVa and a day camp at Liberty and got further instruction. And then he went back to the Bahamas. He ran on the beach. He has a college-age brother who threw him some passes. We also have really good coaches that have taken him under their wing and instructed him. He has learned quickly.”

Looking to improve to 3-0 on the season, LCA will next take on Charlotte Christian. Following this game, Coach Rocco and Knowles plan to make a highlight tape to send out to college coaches.

“At this point I think he is rolling the dice and possibly risking another receiver or two coming
