Mike London’s first big recruiting splash as University of Virginia head coach came in early March, when Clifton Richardson , one of the state’s top 2011 class prospects, pledged to the Cavaliers. The news was tempered by Richardson declaring the commitment to be “soft,” stating that he would continue to consider other programs. Following UVa’s season opening win over the University of Richmond, however, the Menchville (Newport News, VA) product now says he is firmly in UVa’s camp.

“I did talk with my parents. My commitment is firm,” Richardson said.

He added, “I’m going to let all other schools know. I just haven’t had a chance to get on the phone this week because I’ve been preparing for our game [against Woodrow Wilson High on Friday night].”

This news isn’t a big surprise, but it certainly is welcomed. Throughout the spring and summer, Richardson has taken several visits to the University of Virginia. He has consistently spoken glowingly of the UVa coaches. It seemingly was only a matter of time before the standout senior solidified his decision.

“I knew I was going to be a Cav when I first made a soft verbal,” said Richardson. “My parents loved it. It’s close to home and I can get a great education.”

The Richmond game helped, though.

“I really liked the atmosphere and the offense they run,” said Richardson, a quarterback and free safety in high school but a running back recruit for Virginia. “I think they will utilize my talent at running back, but also utilize my talent at receiver and slot.”

Richardson plans on trying to help out UVa on the recruiting trail, but he is also pleased with the class the Virginia coaches have put together so far, especially in-state.
