It’s a big hole Keith Payne has left – literally and figuratively. The bruising former Hoo led the ACC in scoring last year with 16 touchdowns, 14 on the ground, and had a superb 4.7 yards per carry average in a breakout season last year. That means playing time and production are up for grabs alongside team captain Perry Jones .

Going in to spring practice, there was a lot of chatter around Charlottesville that freshman Kevin Parks would make a serious run at the starting job. But it was Jones, who finished second on the team last year in yards with 646 and carries with 137 to finish with the exact same 4.7 yards per carry that Payne had, that continued to impress everyone from coaches to teammates and outside observers.

Payne and Jones are different backs – Payne preferring up the middle runs with a head of steam, while Jones is more likely to cut it outside and use his small frame to pick up yards.
