Donta Wilkins ‘ standout 2011 season performance was recognized by the Virginia High School Coaches Association, which selected the 6’3″, 300-pound junior offensive lineman/defensive tackle to its first-team all-state defense and second-team all-state offense squads. Potomac’s (Dumfries, VA) major college prospect certainly has the ability, but it’s his passion and intensity that separate him from the rest.

“When he’s on the field, he never takes a play off,” Potomac head coach Jerry Roadcap said of Wilkins, who also earned Washington Post first-team all-metro honors for his play on offense last season. “He loves blocking. He loves playing on the defensive line. He does whatever we need him to do. He plays from the snap to the whistle. Some guys take plays off. He never does. He has got a lot of natural ability, but that desire and will to play to the whistle has got him where he is today.”

Roadcap took over as Potomac head coach in the spring of 2010. Wilkins began his varsity football career the previous season, when he started as a freshman. Though the Panthers current coach was not at the helm in 2009, he still recalls Wilkins’ freshman season performance.

“He was the best lineman then. No question,” Roadcap said. “He was still a good-sized kid and he still could move his feet, but he wasn’t as dominating as he is now.”

Wilkins graded out at 85-percent or better every week last season. Defensively, he finished the year with 83 total tackles, nine sacks and three forced fumbles. His future college position depends on the school, but college coaches have indicated he could play on either side of the line.

“It depends on what the needs are,” Roadcap said, referring to which position Wilkins would likely play in college. Defensive tackle and center have been the most discussed positions.

With the Evaluation Period beginning in April and running through the end of May, recruiting figures to pick up over the course of the next few months. Wilkins boasts a handful of offers already, including Boston College, N.C. State and Virginia. Roadcap says that Virginia Tech has not yet definitively come through with an offer, but
