All three QBs flashed their skills at times during Monday’s season-opening practice at The Park.

Virginia opened football practice Monday at an unfamiliar location but that didn’t stop the quarterbacks from being the focus of attention. That’s not surprising. After all, high-profile transfer Phillip Sims sparked the offseason interest level in the position when he left Alabama to join UVa so the practice at The Park provided the first side-by-side glimpse of Sims, Michael Rocco, and David Watford .

Each flashed signs of starter potential for the Hoos.

Sims’ reported arm strength proved true. His passes cover distance with a zip. Rocco’s consistency continued to be on display as he regularly found the right guy quickly and delivered the ball on time for receivers to do something with it. Meanwhile, Watford’s downfield cannon had its target-seeking function fully dialed in Monday.

That doesn’t even mention true freshmen Greyson Lambert and Matt Johns , who are both expected to redshirt. In other words, the quarterback position appears to be healthier than it has in years past and there are plenty of options for Mike London and Bill Lazor to sort through in the coming weeks.
