The top two high school football programs in the state of Maryland squared off against each other last Friday night. The Good Counsel Falcons (Olney), featuring UVa-bound QB Micah Kiser -led Gilman (Baltimore) with both teams looking to rebound after losing in the ESPN High School Kick-off the previous week. The hard-fought contest needed an overtime period to be decided, and the Falcons came out on top with a 20-19 win.

First Half Summary

Gilman could hardly have asked for a better start to this game. Greyhounds senior linebacker Micah Kiser recovered a Dorian O’Daniel fumble on the game’s first play. Three plays later, Trevor Wey connected from 29 yards out to give his team an early 3-0 lead.

Good Counsel appeared to have something started on its next drive, when senior wide receiver/cornerback Kirk Garner took a short pass and sprinted about 30 yards down the field. But Garner fumbled, and once again a Gilman defender recovered. Bob Milloy’s defense once again stiffened, and this time the Greyhounds were unable to convert the turnover into points.

“As a captain, I can’t think about it,” Garner, a Virginia recruit, said of his fumble. He ended up with five catches for 95 yards. “I definitely have to put it aside because I can’t focus on the past.”

After a shaky first couple of possessions, the Falcons ended the first quarter with a 55-yard drive capped off by a 10-yard touchdown run by O’Daniel. Blending power with speed and quick feet, the Clemson-bound senior had several good runs on the drive. The extra point was missed, giving the Falcons a 6-3 leading heading into the second.

There was not much action offensively in the second quarter, but just before half Wey booted his second field goal to tie the game at six. Good Counsel had three penalties on the drive, including a personal foul following a third down stop.

Second Half Summary

Both defenses continued to play well in the second half, but Good Counsel’s 5-star senior Kendall Fuller came up with the needed spark. The 5’11”, 185-pound wide receiver/cornerback hauled in an amazing 41-yard catch to give the Falcons the ball in Gilman
