Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL) rising senior Chris Nelson is no longer committed to the University of Virginia. The 6’3″, 285-pound defensive tackle prospect informed Mike London of his decision on Tuesday night, almost eight full months after he initially pledged to the Cavaliers head coach.

“I de-committed,” Nelson confirmed to

On August 27, 2012, Nelson, a close friend of former VCA star/current Cavaliers rising sophomore linebacker Demeitre Brim , became UVa’s first recruit from the class of 2014. Virginia was the first school to offer, but others would follow suit over the course of the fall and winter months. Nelson now boasts full scholarship offers from Central Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Purdue, South Florida, and of course UVa. Florida and Miami are among the other schools expressing serious interest.

It is known that Nelson has visited other schools besides Virginia throughout this year, including Florida, Miami, and South Florida. He did travel to Charlottesville earlier this month for the Cavaliers’ Spring Game.

Right now, I just want to wait and see what happens with everything.”

Nelson isn’t sure when he will make a final decision on his college future, but he is not in any rush.

“Everybody’s even right now,” said Nelson. “I don’t know when I’m going to decide.”

According to Nelson, Coach London said they will continue to recruit him. The Sunshine State standout also says he is still considering Virginia. A return trip to Charlottesville isn’t scheduled yet, as Nelson only mentioned camps at Florida and Miami on his upcoming schedule.

EDGE Outlook: This is certainly not a surprise for those familiar with Nelson’s recruitment. As mentioned above, he has taken unofficial visits to other schools this year, and in a February 18 Sabre Scoop feature he had the following to say about his commitment status:

“Right now, it’s a little shaky. But right now, I’m still locked on to Virginia. I’m still talking with my parents about it,” Nelson said.
