UVa’s Newest Commitment

Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) offensive lineman Will Richardson verbally committed to the University of Virginia this past weekend. I’ve caught up with the 6’6″, 300-pound rising senior and will have a full article out later this week, but in the meantime here are a few notables…

– Richardson has started at right offensive tackle throughout his varsity career, but Virginia is recruiting him as a left tackle. I personally wouldn’t be surprised to see the standout prospect play on the interior, but left tackle is the position the coaches are saying they want him to play.

– Richardson will graduate early from Cummings and enroll at UVa in January of 2014.

“[Virginia’s coaches] knew this once they offered,” Richardson said, referring to his plan to graduate this December and enroll in college in January. “They’ve already known. They’re cool with it. I’ve already talked with the academic coordinator.”

Richardson believes early enrollment will benefit him athletically and academically. With respect to the latter, Richardson wants to major in Architecture. The extra semester will give him time to get the necessary course work in.

– Richardson considered offers from Florida State and Virginia Tech, among others, before choosing Virginia. He admits he grew up a Virginia Tech fan but added that he never rooted against UVa. He ultimately committed to the Cavaliers because “I just felt at home.”

According to Varina (VA) head coach Stu Brown, Tim Harris are expected to enroll at UVa this summer.

The news on Chavis, who graduated from Varina before attending Fork Union Military Academy for a postgraduate year, was first revealed by FUMA postgraduate head coach John Shuman in an interview last month. Coach Brown confirmed the news Tuesday evening.
