Football Recruiting News

This edition of “Sabre Scoop” begins with some not-so-good news for the Cavaliers football program. Memphis University (Memphis, TN) rising senior place-kicker/punter Gary Wunderlich recently received a full scholarship offer from Ole Miss, and at this point the verbal commitment he gave to UVa is in question.

“The Ole Miss offer kind of surprised me,” said Wunderlich, who is rated the top place-kicking prospect in the nation by Kohl’s Kicking and Chris Sailer Kicking. He has also been named to the Under Armour All-American Bowl, where he’ll handle the punting duties and do some kick-offs. “It has always been UVa and Ole Miss for me. I’m still committed to UVa, but I don’t really know what I’m going to do.”

Wunderlich attended an Ole Miss camp recently. It was then that he kicked in front of head coach Hugh Freeze, who subsequently extended an offer. The 6’0″, 180-pound prospect says he was at the camp to support teammates who were participating.

Wunderlich, whose parents graduated from UVa, says he does not have a timetable for when he will make his final decision. He did say, though, that he will be in Charlottesville for Virginia’s game against BYU.

I’ll have a full report on Wunderlich later this week.

Stroman Set To Decide; Farrar Set To Visit

– Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA) rising senior Greg Stroman is working towards his college choice. Duke, Virginia, and Virginia Tech are the three finalists for the 6’0″, 165-pound athlete, who hopes to know his college choice by August 1.

“Probably a couple days after (August 1),” Stroman wrote in a text, “I will announce at my school.”

This race is a close one. I still feel the decision will come
