Tailback Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, center Eric Tetlow , offensive tackle Sadiq Olanrewaju, defensive tackles Tyrell Chavis and Donte Wilkins, and cornerback Kirk Garner are the subjects of the annual “Freshmen Report” for the Hoo Preview. At least three of these freshmen (Mizzell, Chavis, and Wilkins) appear to be locks to take the field this coming season, and another (Garner) could be working his way into the rotation as well. Tetlow, meanwhile, worked with the second-team offense recently while Jackson Matteo sat out with an injury that gave Ross Burbank the first team reps.

Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, TB, 5’10”, 185 pounds, Bayside High School (Virginia Beach, VA)
Mizzell is UVa’s most highly acclaimed freshman, earning 5-star status from Rivals.com as well as a spot in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Expectations are high, not only from fans but from himself.
“Coming in, in a time like this for UVa, I want to be a big playmaker they need. I want a chance to be a Freshman All-American,” Mizzell said in an interview with TheSabre in November of 2012.
Mizzell was told he would play this season. From day one he has been in the running back rotation, working as a kick returner and punt returner as well. Mizzell has been impressive so far, showing poise as well as the speed and quickness that impressed college recruiters and recruiting analysts in his time at Bayside.
