10 Questions For Tony Bennett’s Virginia Basketball Team, Part I

The wait is almost over. Following back-to-back 30-win seasons and ACC Regular Season titles, Virginia fans have been almost giddy – no make that completely giddy – waiting for this basketball season to arrive. The Hoos finally end the excruciatingly long offseason when the season tips off Friday at 7 p.m. against Morgan State.

Why so much excitement? The answer is simple. Many of the key pieces of from those 60 wins are still wearing orange and blue. London Perrantes, Malcolm Brogdon, Anthony Gill, Mike Tobey, and Evan Nolte all have played significant minutes the past two seasons. Brogdon (first-team All-ACC), Gill (third-team All-ACC), and Tobey (ACC Sixth Man of the Year) each received some sort of recognition in postseason ACC voting a year ago as well. That’s a lot of experience in the coffers.

One basic question, of course, is whether the Hoos can turn that experience into results. The answer? Likely. Before the Cavaliers take the floor each season, I like to take a look at what I think are 10 of the biggest questions facing that year’s team. With lofty expectations as the backdrop for this season’s edition of UVa basketball, it’s time to dive in to Part I with the first five questions.

10. Will Early Offense Be The New Offensive Rebounding?

One of college basketball’s storylines this season is the installation of a 30-second shot clock, shaving 5 seconds off of the allotted time for more than two decades. The 35-second clock was put in place in 1993-94 season. For some teams, the change may be a minor footnote. For more deliberate teams like Virginia, the time shift could have a more noticeable impact offensively.
