Quick Take: Ty Jerome Staying Positive, Eyes Future

After helping Iona Prep (New Rochelle, N.Y.) to a 5-2 start to the 2015/2016 season, senior point guard and University of Virginia recruit Ty Jerome sat on the sidelines for the Gaels’ next four games because of hip pain. On January 11, the 6’5” standout announced via Twitter that he would miss the rest of his high school season because of hip surgery.

Jerome averaged 20 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game his junior season, helping Iona Prep to a 22-6 record and its first Archdiocesan championship in school history. He experienced hip pain last spring and summer but ultimately played through it and impressed on the Nike EYBL circuit. Jerome, who signed a letter of intent with Virginia this past November, entered his senior season as a consensus 4-star recruit. He was off to a great start to his senior season, most notably turning in a 37-point performance in a win over Christ The King, before sitting out with the injury.

Jerome’s first surgery, which is scheduled for January 25, will repair a torn labrum and misshaped ball socket in his right hip. He’ll have a similar surgery on his left hip as well.

Jerome took some time this week for a “Quick Take,” in which he discusses his upcoming surgeries, his recovery prognosis, and of course his future at UVA.
