Panther Creek (Cary, N.C.) senior forward Justin McKoy has signed a financial aid agreement with the University of Virginia, Cavalier men’s basketball head coach Tony Bennett announced on Thursday (April 25). The signing comes 10 days after the 6’8”, 225-pound prospect gave his verbal commitment to the Hoos.

“We are excited to welcome Justin into the Virginia men’s basketball family,” Bennett said in this official press release from Virginia Sports. “Justin is a talented forward who is skilled and competitive. He and his family value education and we’re looking forward to having Justin join our program this fall.”

Until this spring, McKoy was thought to be headed to the Big 10 as he signed a letter of intent with Penn State during the Early Signing Period last November. However, he asked for and was granted a release by the Nittany Lions late last month. Twenty minutes after announcing he was back on the market, McKoy was on the phone with NC State head coach Kevin Keatts, who offered a scholarship. Virginia’s Bennett wasn’t far behind, touching base with McKoy while preparing the Cavaliers for an Elite Eight showdown with Purdue.

“[Bennett] told me he found out [about the release] and wanted to call immediately and that was very nice to hear,” McKoy wrote in a Twitter interview with TheSabre. “I knew UVA was a place I really was considering a lot because of Coach Bennett. He had intentions of getting me to visit but a national championship was more important at the moment.”
