Virginia Football Notes: Moving Forward Without Briggs, Reinkensmeyer

Between defensive tackle Jowon Briggs’ decision to transfer and offensive lineman Dillon Reinkensmeyer’s season-ending injury, the University of Virginia football program lost two key players in the trenches this week. How will head coach Bronco Mendenhall and staff address the loss of two players who had started all of UVA’s games thus far in 2020?

THE DEFENSIVE LINE

Virginia defensive coordinator Nick Howell was “surprised” about Briggs’ sudden departure.

“I was surprised and I think it took us off guard,” Howell said. “Our reaction to it is we have to move on with the guys that are here and do our very best. Just like any other situation. You just go forward. Move on and continue to do your very best that you possibly can.”

Moving on will be a challenge considering Briggs’ contributions. The 6’1”, 310-pound sophomore played 305 defensive snaps this season according to Pro Football Focus, which is second among Cavalier defensive linemen. Only senior end
