The Hunter Heist? Larceny In Louisville? Buzzer-Beat Folds The Cards? The Virginia basketball team pulled off one of the more improbable – and thrilling – comebacks in program history on Thursday night at Louisville. Trailing by four points with less than one second to go, a pair of free throws followed by a pair of violations led to a banked buzzer beater that carried the Cavaliers past the Cardinals, 67-66.
De’Andre Hunter got the honors for making the final steal-the-win shot, while Ty Jerome kept the possibility of such a ridiculous ending alive with some truly clutch plays down the stretch for Virginia. That included a step-back 3-pointer just in front of UVA’s bench with 6.1 seconds to go, the two big free throws to get within two points, and a perfectly placed pass into Hunter’s hands on the game-winner.
Seriously, so much happened in the final 35 seconds that the message boards have had references to Ric Flair, The Princess Bride, The Longest Yard, Adele songs, and much more throughout the day Friday. Being on the winning end of a miracle finish makes fans giddy I guess.
The Double Bonus tries to keep the good feelings going with a look back at the Miracle In Louisville (always good to give a hat tip to the 1976 ACC Tournament Champions!).
